Snapchat released dark mode on iOS after initial tests on the app with a small group of users in 2020.
Here’s what to know about the dark mode update and how to enable the feature in Snapchat.
Keep the Theme of Your Social Media Apps Consistent
Snapchat follows in the footsteps of other social media apps that have launched this option. It’s is a nice touch if your phone or other social media apps are already set to that theme.
Alternatively, you can switch things up now and then by alternating between the two themes.
The new feature allows you to experience the app with a dark theme. It also feels more “comfortable” against the app’s bright colors, mellowing down the harsh yellow color of the app.
It’s also useful if you’re sensitive to bright light, frequently use the app at night, or just prefer to use apps with a dark background.
How to Switch to Dark Mode on Snapchat
Switching to dark mode on Snapchat is a quick and easy process. Here’s how…
First, make sure your Snapchat app is up to date. If it isn’t, find it in the App Store and click Update.
If it’s up to date, open the app and tap the Avatar on the top-left corner of the screen. This will lead you to your profile.
Next, tap on the settings icon in the top-right corner. This will open up a long list of settings.
Scroll down to App Appearance and select it. (If you don’t have the App Appearance setting, that means the dark mode feature is most likely not yet available on your app.)
You will now be presented with three options: Match System, Always Light, and Always Dark. Tap Always Dark, which will immediately set the app to dark mode.
This will also keep the app in dark mode regardless of the time of day or your system settings.
If your phone is already on dark mode, simply select the Match System option which will get Snapchat to match your phone’s settings.
Choosing the Match System setting is also useful if you have your phone set to switch to dark mode on a schedule. Therefore, if your phone switches to dark mode at sunset, the Snapchat app will switch at this time to match your phone OS as well.
Keep Dark Mode Consistent Across All Your Social Media Apps
Finally, with Snapchat catching up to other apps, it won’t be awkward to open the app after using other social media apps with a dark theme.
Now you can keep dark mode consistent on all your social media platforms, and your Snapchat account will no longer feel like a foreign, bright place.
