How do you do that? Let’s find out!

Unlike conventional internet infrastructure that relies on network towers and underground fiber cables, Starlink uses satellites in the sky to connect you to the internet. More succinctly, Starlink relies on thousands of satellites that blanket the earth in lower orbit to relay internet signals. This means that you can connect to the internet in the most remote places on earth where you may not access cell towers and fiber optic cables.

However, to relay internet signals through Starlink satellites, you must install a satellite dish and a Wi-Fi router. What’s more, you can install the Starlink kit in your house, car, boat, or plane.

A Starlink subscription will cost you between $110 to $500 per month on average, and the installation kit could set you back from $599 to $2,500, depending on the package. This is more expensive than most Internet Service Providers in most places.

However, Starlink internet targets customers living in rural and isolated locations with no reliable internet service provider. It’s also convenient if you’re on the move and you want to save cost on internet roaming charges. Better yet, you can make a Wi-Fi call using Starlink satellites—this could be a lifesaver if you’re stranded.

What about the speed? With an average ping of 18ms, Starlink is fast enough to play your favorite video game online. It can also hit a download speed of up to 200 Mbps and an upload speed of up to 42 Mbps. Even so, the speed of your internet when connected through Starlink depends on the number of satellites that cover your area—but you can track them down.

As Starlink launch more satellites into a lower orbit, the internet speed is expected to improve—the company promises a speed of 10 Gpbs when fully operational.

If you want to use Starlink in your car, van, truck, or RV, you need to install the RV package. The hardware will cost you $599 to purchase, and if it doesn’t meet your requirements within the first 30 days, you can send it back to get a full refund.

Starlink for RVs is available in two versions: the in-motion (Flat High Performance) and the portable version. If you want to install a Starlink satellite dish on your vehicle’s roof, you can use the in-motion Flat High-Performance version. It offers faster and more consistent internet speed compared to the portable Starlink for cars.

On the other hand, the portable Starlink dish for RVs is easy to set up in just about any location. However, unlike the in-motion Starlink dish that lets you access the internet while driving, you can only use the Portable Starlink when you’ve parked your car.

If you’re a digital nomad who travels in a car, RV, truck, or van, you can check the Starlink RV coverage map to know where you can access the internet while you’re on the move. Starlink for RVs is currently available in North America, Western Europe, Australia, and a few countries in South America. The monthly subscription cost for this package is $135.

Starlink offers a Maritime version with download speeds of up to 350 Mbps if you’re offshore. It was designed by SpaceX to help launch and recover spacecraft on ocean vessels. Because of that, it can withstand extremely harsh environments (even rocket landings!).

However, Starlink Maritime will cost you $10,000 to install and a $5,000 per month subscription. This could be expensive if you’re on a small boat, but it could be ideal if you’re on a charter, cruise, or high-end yacht. Despite the cost, SpaceX says it cut down its internet cost by 70% after switching from traditional internet service providers to Starlink Maritime.

If you can’t afford Starlink Maritime, you can still install Starlink for RVs on your boat at no extra cost. Just like in an RV or a car, you can choose either the portable or the in-motion (Flat High Performance) satellite dish.

Both the Starlink for Maritime and RVs are easy to install on boats—the installation instructions are available on the Starlink app. Beyond that, you could use the Starlink app to scan the sky and find the best location to install your satellite dish. What’s more, you could check out the Starlink Maritime coverage map to see where you can access the internet on a boat using Starlink Maritime.

Starlink can also be used on a plane, but you must install the Aviation package. Unlike Starlink for RVs or boat that comes with a satellite dish, Starlink Aviation uses a low-profile antenna to receive and send internet signals from the satellites. However, you need permission from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to install Starlink Aviation because the installation will alter the original design of the plane.

How much does it cost to install? The hardware will cost you $150,000, and the monthly subscription is between $12,500 to $25,000 per month, depending on the internet speed and consistency. SpaceX says Starlink Aviation can deliver a latency of less than 20ms and download speeds of up to 350 Mbps on air.

If SpaceX delivers on that promise, most airlines could improve their in-flight Wi-Fi if they install the Starlink Aviation package. However, Starlink Aviation is expected to be delivered in mid-2023.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re in a house, car, boat, or plane—you can use Starlink to connect to the internet in the most remote locations on the planet. At the moment, the subscription cost of Starlink is more expensive than traditional internet service providers. Still, you could have no other option if you’re in a remote location with no network towers or fiber optic cables to connect you to the internet.
